The Cat Came Back

For over 30 years, the Black Cat has made its mark on Ottawa, bringing authenticity and a world class dining experience to the streets of Canada's Capital city.

It began in 1979 when Richard Urquhart, a Cape Breton native, stopped into Le Pigeon Bleu at the corner of Pretoria and Colonel By Drive for a cup of coffee and some conversation. That coffee marked the start of a new chapter in Ottawa dining when, a few months later, the Black Cat Café was born.

After a few years on the banks of the Canal, the Cat was ready to roam, and in 1998 it reemerged on Murray Street, in the heart of the Byward Market.Attracting a loyal following of politicians, celebrities, local fans and friends, the Black Cat Café quickly became recognized as one of Canada’s top restaurants, thanks to its knowledgeable staff, inventive wine choices and imaginative cuisine.

In 2008, after 10 years in the market, the Cat was ready for a fresh start. Preston Street, in the heart of Little Italy, provided the perfect venue to put a new twist on this classic Cat. The new Black Cat is quite simply a "neighborhood bistro". Yvonne Potter, owner of Y Design Studio, has created a distinctive space for the new Black Cat, blending bistro simplicity with a cosmopolitan vibe.

Offering Modern French cuisine with a distinctively personal touch, the Black Cat Bistro continues to be one of the city’s hottest dining destinations.
